Marble-effect porcelain tiles

Marble-effect porcelain was born to solve a contradiction: everyone wants Calacatta or Statuario veining in their living room, but very few want what comes after it. Real marble is limestone; it scratches with the grit carried in on a shoe, stains with lemon and vinegar, and needs periodic sealing to stop it absorbing. Porcelain reproduces that veining with high-definition digital printing on a body that absorbs no water and is unaffected by household acids.

The quality of a marble effect is judged by repetition. In budget series you quickly spot four or five patterns cycling round, and the eye catches it most on large surfaces. Our series work with a high number of distinct faces, so that across a whole room it is hard to find two identical pieces. When setting out, mix pieces from several boxes rather than emptying them in order — that is exactly how visible repeats are created.

The finish changes the result entirely. Polished restores the shine of treated marble and multiplies light, but it shows footprints and is slippery when wet: use it in living rooms, bedrooms and on walls, never on a shower floor. Matt and satin come closer to honed marble, show dirt less and are the safe choice in kitchens and bathrooms. For outdoors, several series offer an anti-slip version.

Large format is this effect's natural ally: the fewer the joints, the more the veining reads as one continuous piece of stone. In 120x120 and the 100x300 slab you can use the mitred edge detail on worktops and fronts so the material looks solid. If the project includes worktop, splashback and flooring in the same series, order it all together: it guarantees the pieces come from the same batch and the tone matches.

One last tip on grout colour: with marble effect, a grout matched to the palest tone of the veining disappears visually, while a darker one draws a grid across the floor and breaks the illusion of continuous stone. Ask for a sample of the chosen piece before deciding the grout, since the tone on screen rarely matches the tone in your own light.
