How to choose the porcelain for your project
Porcelain stoneware has become the reference material for flooring and wall cladding for one simple reason: it absorbs less than 0.5 % water. That compactness, achieved by pressing the body and firing it above 1,200 °C, explains everything else. It withstands frost without cracking, takes constant foot traffic without losing its finish, does not stain with oil or wine, and cleans with water and neutral soap without any periodic treatment. Unlike natural stone, it never needs sealing.
The first decision is not colour but format. Large format — 60x120, 120x120 and the 100x300 slab — reduces the number of joints and makes a small room read as one continuous plane; it is the usual choice in new builds and full refurbishments. The 60x60 and 90x90 formats are easier to handle and cut, and remain the most efficient option where there are many corners, junctions or drains. For walls, 30x60 and 30x90 let you clad a full surface with very little waste.
The finish determines where each piece can go. Polished returns a mirror shine that multiplies light, but it is slippery when wet: keep it to dry areas. Matt is the all-rounder for interiors. And anti-slip, graded by its slip resistance, is mandatory on any floor that gets wet — shower tray, poolside, terrace, porch. If you are torn between two finishes of the same series, the rule of thumb is simple: wherever there is water, go anti-slip.
By effect, marble brings the noble vein without the upkeep of stone; wood adds warmth to a floor that gets mopped daily; cement and microcement carry industrial and minimalist interiors; stone and cotto push the project towards the rustic and the outdoors. All our series are rectified, meaning their edges are cut square after firing so they can be laid with a minimum 1.5 to 2 mm joint for an almost seamless surface.

- Which porcelain format is best for a living room?
- In living rooms, large format 60x120 or 120x120 is the most common choice because it reduces visible joints and visually widens the space. If the room is under 20 m² or has many corners, 60x60 and 90x90 perform just as well and generate less offcut. What you should avoid is mixing different formats within the same continuous plane.
- Can the same porcelain go on both floor and walls?
- Yes, and it is now standard practice in bathrooms and kitchens: it gives visual continuity and removes the break between materials. The only condition is the right finish underfoot; a polished series works perfectly on walls, but a wet-area floor needs its anti-slip version.
- How much extra should I order for offcuts?
- The general recommendation is to add between 5 % and 10 % on top of the usable square metres. 5 % is enough in rectangular rooms with straight laying; go up to 10 % for diagonal or herringbone patterns and for spaces with many corners and doorways. That margin also covers site breakages and leaves spare pieces for future repairs.
- Is large-format porcelain suitable for underfloor heating?
- Yes. Porcelain is one of the best floor finishes for underfloor heating because it conducts heat efficiently and does not deform through temperature cycles. You only need the right cementitious adhesive and to respect the gradual start-up of the system after laying.
